Hi!

This post will hopefully clarify why and when you need the windoze Steam client and why and when you can avoid it.

This whole story is pretty simple:
some Steam games don’t start without the client up and running

But this also means that:
some Steam games don’t need the client to be played

The latter are known as DRM-free games and you can find more info here.

This is why some people like to buy games on GOG to have a 100% DRM-free library and avoid Steam as much as possible.

Ok now I’m going to explain you about these 3 software but first please keep in mind that:

you need WINE to run non-Native applications

the 3 software:

  • Steam Native Linux client
  • Steam windoze client
  • Steamcmd

Here is what you can do with them:

Steam Native client
Install Native games ——> YES
Play Native games        ——> YES
Install non-Native games ——× NO
Play non-Native games ——× NO
Steam windoze client
Install Native games ——× NO
Play Native games ——× NO
Install non-Native games ——> YES
Play non-Native games ——> YES
Steamcmd
Install Native games ——> YES
Play Native games ——× NO
Install non-Native games ——> YES
Play non-Native games ——× NO

Now I’ll analyze a few situations you may end up with:

I want to install a Native game
   1) Open Steam Native and install the game
   2) Install the game with Steamcmd
I want to play a Native game that needs the client
   1) Open Steam Native and launch the game
I want to play a Native game that doesn't need the client
   1) Launch the game executable
   2) Open Steam Native and launch the game
I want to install a non-Native game
   1) Use WINE to open Steam non-Native and install the game
   2) Install the game with Steamcmd
I want to play a non-Native game that needs the client
   1) Use WINE to open Steam non-Native and launch the game
I want to play a Native game that doesn't need the client
   1) Use WINE to launch the game executable
   2) Use WINE to open Steam non-Native and launch the game

These operations can be done:
¹ without Steam Native client
² without Wine
³ without Steam non-Native client
